HARWICH PORT-- A 50th birthday party on Nantucket Sound turned into a harrowing ordeal when a chartered 42-foot Whisper Jet motorboat caught fire about three miles off of Wychmere Harbor late Friday night. The US Coast Guard 27-foot utility boat from Stage Harbor and Dennis Fire Department rescue boat responded to the scene early Saturday morning, July 31, 2010. The 10 male and female passengers on board the chartered vessel were celebrating a 50th birthday party when the boat reportedly started experiencing mechanical difficulties and a loss of steering followed by the outbreak of a fire in the stern of the vessel. When the Coast Guard 27-footer arrived on scene, the crew found the vessel's skipper and the 10 passengers on the bow of the boat with the stern in flames, moments from having to jump into the water. The Coast Guard crew rescued the occupants from the burning vessel and headed for Wychmere Harbor. Ambulances from Harwich, Chatham, and Dennis were dispatched to the scene and rescue personnel met the Coast Guard vessel at the Wychmere Harbor Pier at Harbor Road in Harwichport. All of those aboard the rescue vessel appeared to be dry and uninjured. Rescue personnel checked the group of men and women before they left the scene in their personal vehicles. There were no reported injuries. During the course of the incident, observers from Glendon Beach in Dennisport to Wychmere Harbor in Harwich Port could see the glow of the fire and a large plume of smoke from the ...
